Family Member Focus: Don Carrington

A Family Friend is delighted to welcome Don Carrington as a new family member in home care. Don is 94 years old, but who would’ve thunk it? He has the sharpness and vitality of a man many years his junior. Some say with his slick silver hair, high-wattage smile, and ever-present warmth and humor, Don could be a “body double” for U.S. politician Joe Biden.

A native of Philadelphia, PA, Don is a World War II veteran. He met his wife, Mur, at Gettysburg College in 1946. They raised three children, Don, Russ, and Sue, and spent most of their married life in the Washington, DC, area.

Don had an illustrious career, first working for C&P Telephone Company and then for the U.S. Foreign Service and the U.S. Senate Rules Committee. In his professional life and as a volunteer, he has been at the front line of social change. In 1963, Don marched with Reverend Martin Luther King. Through the years, he has served as a tireless advocate for equal rights for women, minorities, and the underserved.

Don is also an avid sports enthusiast, playing golf (in college, he set a course record at Pennsylvania’s Caledonia State Park) and coaching community baseball and football youth teams.

Don and Mur moved to Raleigh in 2006 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007, five months before Mur died following a long illness. Don continues to live in the Raleigh house they shared and is determined to stay independent – with a little help from A Family Friend!

Still exercising daily, staying on top of current events, and nurturing his social connections, Don is an admirable role model for living with zest and aging with grace, right at home.

Always ready to party

Five years ago, to honor her dad and mark the start of his ninth decade, Don’s daughter Sue hosted a bus trip to the Kentucky Derby. A highlight of the extravaganza: Don crashed a bachelorette party and danced in the streets of downtown Louisville. See the movie here.
